Those of you who grow in pond baskets, do you find it necessary to line the basket with screen mesh or someother lining material? I was wondering if the openings in pond baskets are too large and allow bonsai soil to fall thru. Thanks

No inner lining, I just use the baskets as they are, only the fines escape.

I think if you are using soil that is fine enough to be washed out of a pond basket, it is too fine. There are a million different bonsai soil recipes, but all agree on one common attribute - the soil must be grainy, gritty, and rough. It should allow water to pass through without becoming waterlogged, and should allow oxygen to enter the soil, thereby preventing anaerobic conditions.

Just the baskets as they are. I only wish I would have been doing that years ago.
