Trying to get my summer buys out of their nursery soil and 5 gallon containers into some pond baskets and bonsai soil. Rush to repot right now in AZ. Pretty short window. These guys will stay in partial sun for a few days than back on the bench.

Feedback appreciated and welcomed.

Like !!!

Found a supplier of pond baskets down here, then found a supplier of
colanders with the same shape ------ ha ha.

Since we colander all for ground growing and then cover the colander with leaves,
so the sun has no effect on them. The colanders won.

For refinement, we use oversized plastic containers for refinement.
Bought quite a few oversized plastic bonsai containers, mica and large UV
stabilised saucers to keep the roots spread out.

Can you check to see which ones of yours trunk thicken in the pond baskets.
Would be very helpful to know.
Good Day
Anthony

Will do Anthony. I do not bury mine. I get these from a local hydroponic store. They are about $1.40 a basket. I do not get nearly as many as you do I am sure. Always enjoy your input!

What's the advantage of using pond baskets? Air flow?

Drainage...airflow. Way to keep the roots compact. Lightweight...durable....cheap.

I offer this to anyone who may be interested in a schedule for working your bonsai trees and have a similar climate as Arizona. This was created by Leroy Fujii, Phoenix Bonsai Society mentor and teacher, and was put in the societies handbook in 84-85. It is being looked at for updating by their current mentors but is still a great resource for beginners. Keep in mind your climate may differ so the times would change.

The blackout areas designate the time you can complete the given task.

Looking Great! You have some nice trunks!

Side Bar-- People forget that when we water, the single most important aspect of the activity is provideing oxygen to the root zone. So you need said zone to stay (wait for it, I'm gonna say it) MOIST but with loads of avalilble oxygen, and nutrients at the same time. That and air pruning are the #1a and #1b reasons to use pond baskets.

(Neither of which happen when burried or doubled BTW)
