So this thing grew like crazy untouched all summer. Going to a workshop tomorrow with an idea in my head...and attempted to scratch out on paper

Nice. Nice bark on the trunk.

If it were on my bench. I would not bring the end of the branch up as you have it in the drawing. I would essentially keep it as is, and just work on slowly getting it to be more compact, more ramification. I would then play with planting angle. The photo

is similar to what I would consider the "final design". Simply compact the fine growth and get more ramification. But play with different angles. Your drawing comes close to being the "Dreaded S Curve". Which to my eye would be heading toward mediocrity.

Nice tree, and in its current form as in the photo, pretty darn nice as it is.

Thanks for the input Leo....gives me something to think about. I see what you’re saying about the S-curve. That’s definitely something I want to avoid. I’m still sitting here looking at it trying to come up with ideas. I’ve been to a few good workshops now, and what I’m trying to avoid it’s just walking in and handing an artist/instructor a tree and giving them a blank stare. I want to have an idea at this one .

So went to my workshop yesterday. Thought about what Leo said, came with a new idea and drawing. Showed my ideas to the instructor and this is what happened. Mostly compacted the the foliage and added some movement to the branches. The pics kind of suck because the needles are so long it’s hard to tell what was done.
