the problem with using the apical leader as a sacrifice for trunk thickening is that you get a totem pole or telephone pole, take your pick(zero taper)

I agree that's why I suggested cutting back in a year or so. If you induce a lot of back budding you will still get the trunk to thicken, just not as quick as in the ground or with an apical escape branch.

However this begs a question: If you wanted a thin trunked Literati why are we now discussing ways to thicken the trunk? I'm confused. You don't necessarily want a thick trunk but you do want bark and you'll get that naturally with a JBP especially if you let the wire bite just a little bit, not enough to scar just create some constrictions.
