How do you store your spare bonsai pots? I have a couple from trees that died this winter, plus various pots scattered around the house. I am interested in clever ideas on storing pots.

Thanks

Frank

I struggle with this same problem. It seems that my benches change and move every couple of years, and the place I normally keep pots gets bumped by benches that are relocated. Add to that the fact that both the number of pots seems to be increasing, but also the number of trees in containers. I'm thinking the answer will be to "go up", but I'll be watching this thread for ideas myself.

The majority of my pots are stored on a free standing 6' tall shelf in the garage, where they are stacked on each other. Others can be found throughout the house on top of bureaus and bookcases, and still more can be found on and under the benches outside...you can never have enough pots;).

All of ours are still packed since we moved and happily out of they way right now except for two or three. I do not like to store anything in the "open" and suggested to my Wife that when I get to the guest Suite remodel I could line one wall with glass door front book shelf units. That would satisfy her need for book storage as well. The downside is that they will be to far away from my new bench. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Many people store them under their benches outside, claiming that helps the pots develop the cherished "patina."

When I empty a nice pot, I place it out on my deck in the sunlight for a week or two, letting rain and sun clean and sterilize the pots a bit before moving them inside to shelves in my garage.

Sounds like a good plan.

The ones I have space for are stacked on shelves. The rest are in boxes w/ cut up box as spacers (like drinking glass boxes...only irregularly spaced/divided) :)

Photos in my album reminds me of what I have (some with rulers for scale or dimensions in file name) before I go physically searching for it.

I keep most of 'em stacked up under a bench...though some favorites are in my office while waiting for the right tree.

Your bench have some serious deflection there Brian...maybe check it regularly now, would hate for it the trees to crash on your pots. Just a concern.

That looks like one of mine. 12 foot 2x4s just seem not to have enough strength for years of heavy pots. Sometimes I put a freestanding leg under the center to keep the bow from getting worse. Then again, I dont keep anything valuable like pots under it! I need to stick with 8 foot benches, or start using 2x6s.

It's always good to donate extra pots to your clubs auction. Benefits the club and also helps newcomers get started.

Yeah, it's been sagging for a couple years, not getting worse, but definitely on the to-do list. Carpenter bees don't help either!

Display Them

For now, my pots are under the bed in the guest bedroom. Longer term, I plan on attaching shelves to a wall in my home office and the shelves will have double duty as pots storage as well as display area. Perhaps I will take pictures and share them once done? I hope to get started this summer
