Just got my hands on a nice cryptomeria, stout with very good movement for the species, its a dwarf but from no real pruning, alot of branches lost their foilage close to the trunk,id like to use these heavier branches down low on the tree,my ? IS how much foilage can i remove safely without over stressing the tree?im not gonna mess with the roots this season,id like to get the branch work werei need it before touching the roots, will heavy branch pruning produce backbudding or just new shoots growing from the trunk, thanks

Sorry, can't help as I don't know these, but maybe you could post a pic for us to enjoy?

There are not too many people growing Cryptomerias for a variety of reasons. You need to really talk to someone who has had one for more than ten years. That would be my first search. I don't have any because they simply are not available in Michigan, I suspect they do not do well here. I had a nice one when I lived in California but did not survive the move to Des Moines Iowa. I had the tree about three years before the move. The other alternitive would be to experiment with the tree you have, that's the way I learned about Mugo Pine. My choice was to do it the way every body did it and fail or look for new ways. I looked for and found ways that were successful.

Thanks for the advice Vance,im gonna take it slow for now and like you said, see how the tree reacts, and Judy im stoked about showing pics of some material,my wife is not so enthused, she works nights and does notcare much for what she calls is an obsession,we have a new computer and she does not have it set up yet for computer illiterate folks like myself to download pics fromthe new camera which ihavent quite figured out,so when she is off,and has time(3 KIDS)im sure she will get the ball rolling.
