This little zelkova was a volunteer growing in a median. This baby looks to be about 2 years old. The roots were decent, and distributed somewhat evenly. What appealed was the nice straight trunk and the graceful flare at the base. It is about 1.5” at the base and 3/4” a few inches up the trunk. I collected it about two weeks ago and it seems to be doing well. About 18” tall. Will probably be drastically shorter in a few months.

I found one that had a little thicker trunk, but the roots were pretty bad. I cut a couple of bad ones and replanted it. Maybe next year if the roots improve.

Woah, that’s quite a find! I want to assume it’s a bit older than two years, but I have no clue.

Oh yeah. Great score. Did it sulk or drop any leaves after collection?

Two years was a guess, based more on the development of the area than anything else. It was in a median and a redeveloped industrial area that just opened last year, so it is possible the infrastructure went in sometime earlier.

No, it didn’t. The first couple of days the leaves were a little rolled up, but they opened up a couple of days later. I was worried that it might be off season to collect, but from what I’ve read recently I might have timed it okay after all.

Good news on the zelkova front: I collected it a little over two months ago and it seems to be doing well. No leaf drop, no wilting, no dying! And this week I notice new budding, even from the trunk. So I’m not crowing success until I get it through a winter, but signs are looking good. I am thinking a significant trunk cut in early spring to start developing new branches for a broom style.

An update on the zelkova I liberated from a median last year. I did the cut and a little simple wiring just to get the branches pointed in the right direction. I did leave some twigs that were already there. Placement wasn’t bad for my proposed front so kept them for now.
