If you do spray preventatively, JBP, with fungicide and insecticide, what do you use? and how often/schedule?

Neem oil is frequently mentioned, how does that compare to inorganic pesticide? eg sevin, bayer, ortho, spectracide?

Daconil is often mentioned as first choice fungicide. Is any one else using anything different?

For all my conifers, I apply a dormant oil in Late fall and again in late winter...basically now. As a fungicide preventative, I have applied a copper fungicide every 2-3 weeks to my junipers and pines, again starting in late winter as the weather becomes warmer and more humid.

I have always used Ortho Grden Disease Control for my fungicide. As far as insect control,I use a daily routine of water squirt.Bud borers on the jbp seem indestructible with my water routine, though I only lose a bud or two per tree per season.

i have had borers in past. same here only lost bud or 2, Darwinian pruning.

I'm going to continue Sevin, and Daconil, monthly unless other wise instructed.

You may be asking for trouble if you keep using the same agents. That will lead to resistant bugs or disease. Best advice is to rotate 3 agents with different MOA.
I've included a web address to a nursery emagazine that contains a compendium of chemicals grouped by MOA. Not sure it will work from Bnut. If not, send me an email address and I will forward the emagazine to you.
We currently rotate ZeroTol, Phyton 27 and Eagle for fungus control. None of them require a license to purchase.

Good luck,

Forgot to add: the chemical guide is the article entitled "Plant Health Guide" which begins on page 41. It is 10 pages.

I use Fungonil for a fungicide which has the active ingredient Chlorothalonil(sp?). I also use Malathion and Pyrethrin for bugs.

Great info thanks

MOA????
(My Google-fu is strong) and found www.firstrays.com/PDF/Pesticides.pdf
MOA = Mode of Action, see page 4 and 9

alternating MOA....sort of like drug resistant antibiotics.....

capnk or anyone even though article says not to do you treat on a schedule? If so what schedule?

Are you concerned with toxicity to human? There will always be some contact in spite of precautions short of wearing hazmat suit spray/ treat.

I'm very interested in bio friendly agents. Bio pesticides, oil soaps (neem oil, soap) see class M and NC!!! Although not really a "bio" nicotine/tobbaco tea has alot of promise.

My teacher says the best way to deal with pest issues is to come out of winter dormancy pest free. That's why I do the dormant spray when the trees go to sleep and again when they wake up. I don't preemptively treat for insects, but do spray with the fungicide as a preventative on a schedule.
