I'm curious to see what different princess persimmon color variations we can come up with! I have yellow-orange to red. Mostly round, but some a little more elongated.

Yellow-orange.

Darker orange.
pp2.jpg

Cherry red. I really like this one, but only got four seedlings from it last year.
pp3.jpg

Elongated orange.

One of my seedling trays. Don't know why, but four of my larger trees did not fruit this year, even though they did last year. All four were in planters on the ground, while all my trees that fruited were on benches. So next year I will make sure they are all on benches. I'll put my big male in the middle where he can hopefully work his magic :)

How do you treat the seeds? Do you put them in the fridge for a few months before planting? Or just plant them without any special treatment? I just got a princess this fall and plan to sow some of the seeds once the fruits start to go soft.

I leave the fruit on the tree until it is soft and almost dropping. Then I remove the fruit and bag it in a baggy that I label with the tree it came from. Then I leave the baggies outdoors until I am ready to plant them in the spring. This was for SoCal and NC where I do not get a hard freeze. I do not remove the seeds from the fruit until I am ready to plant them. By spring it is half fruit and half mush... but I never see any fungus or mold.

I don't have too many interesting fruits yet, but I have 3 flats of seeds I got from Yamaguchi Yasuhisa in 2018 (the guy who introduced PP to Japanese bonsai.)

Have you figured out anything to do with the sucker growth? I have tried to strike cuttings from them and have been unsuccessful.

Success is totally dependent on how much roots the suckers have, or how much of the mother plant's roots you allow the sucker to keep. I tend to repot later, as the buds are swelling. Suckers I jam in pots and put under the bench so they are in light shade until they are actively growing. Sometimes they sulk until July-October but then start growing. Sometimes the sucker will die and sprout back from its roots.

I got my first princess persimmon this time last year from Ed Clark. In the spring of 2021, I cut back the roots hard and put it on a block to start training the nebari. None of my root cuttings took! 😭

It grew slowly, and didn’t produce fruit this year, but I am optimistic about next season. These are the pictures of the self-fruitful fruit I should see after the new year. Hoping for strong growth and beautiful fruit in 2022!!!1638797526349.jpeg

Ed gets fall color on his princess persimmon as evidenced above. Two falls in a row now the leaves stay green and just fall off. Is this a sign of an issue?

I don't get any fall color on mine. The leaves are still green when they drop - though the leaves are definitely dried up green - ie they dry on the tree and drop.

Mine are not old enough for fruit, black princess persimmon seeds from Taikan Ten Kyoto 2015, this is the second year out in the grow beds. Trunk size grows very slowly at first, a few measure 1/2 inch this fall. Original packet of twenty five seeds now represented by 17 plants that germinated in spring of 2016.
have not been able to differentiate sex of plants yet. Noting some variation in stem color and growth rates. Generally this past year was the most vigorous for the entire group. They were placed out in the row bed the season before. Plan to dig and work on roots this spring and replant in the grow bed. The leaf color does not change on mine either, stay green until they drop. Dropped late this fall, in the past two weeks.IMG_1164.JPG

Great idea for a thread. Your photos are great - thank can't be a phone?

I am working with 35 cultivars as well as 1 male strain. 33 of those 35 cultivars are in the first two images. I compiled a list of all 35 cultivars with their names here: https://www.canadabonsai.com/collections/persimmons

For the most part, my plants look like the one in the 3rd image. They are going serve as parent plants for years to come.

13 of the cultivars are grafted and must be grafted for propagation (cuttings and air layers do not seem to work with these particular cultivars, according to the specialist that I got them from). The others can be grown on their roots--with root cuttings being the first choice among possible methods. I attached 3 images of the grafts of my parent plants. When creating bonsai, my own grafts will have to be much cleaner which is very possible.

For the moment, I using the vendor's photos of the fruit. I will have my own photos in 2022 if all goes according to plan :)

Wow. Wonderful variety, and great to see them in the "lower 48 states", where import permits and phyto certificates are not an issue.

I'm more disorganized, but I have been sprouting batches of D virginiana seed. None of mine have started blooming yet.

Can't get enough of those images @NaoTK ! I hope you will photo-document your processing of the seeds 🥰

More good news in the world of kaki:

This morning 77 kaki were barerooted in Japan and prepared for their phytosanitary inspection, including some seedlings in order to have rootstock and/or males. They should arrive in Canada next week. I plan to take a few root cuttings when possible (from the un-grafted cultivars) before potting them up!

Great thread. As Princess Persimmon seeds are hard to come by here in Europe - would anyone be willing to send me some? Thank you very much.
