Hi all:

One of my JWP ("zuisho") seems to be a little sick. Specifically, one of the branches looks like the tips of the needles are brown/shriveled. More generally, the tree seems a little less healthy and vigorous overall than all my other zuisho's, and what I'm used to from them.

I've attached a couple of clear pictures that show both the up-close detailed problem and the overall look of the branch. Any ideas? Happy to answer recent weather questions or anything else that people think might help diagnose.

thanks!

It might be more than a little sick. It does not look needle cast. Maybe some borer insect of some kind. Is your soil draining well. Looks like the tree may have dried out for a while. Could be over watering or under watering. I think it is a root issue.

Occasionally my Zuisho will have a shoot that does that, for no reason, and it's isolated to just one or two, usually near the top, and in a dense area of the tree.

It happens around this time of year, and it happened more often when it was over potted...in the ground now, and hasn't done it this year. Hope you figure it out.
