Wanted to share.
A few years back, I acquired this juniper from a friend. He received it from a donor who is in his 90s. The donor had this tree for about 20+ years and it shows. He also has Alzheimer's and that's reflected on the tree as well. I've been told that he remembers fondly of the trees he has. But he just doesn't have the capacity to care for his trees anymore. His son convinced him to let them go and get it into those who can care for it. He agreed but has one request, to be able to live vicariously through pictures upon request. It would be my honor to be able to carry on his legacy. The unfortunate part of the story is, he's never reached back out.
Here is the tree when I got it.
What you don't see is the backside where the entire back has desiccated. The soil looks to be in poor shape, and needs an emergency repot. A lot of the wire that bit in was left in while some that I could manage to remove came out.
After a thorough inspection of usable growth, a tree immerged from the tuft of foliage.
Unfortunately, removal of the wires that bit in a bit too much proved to be fatal for some of the branches so some of the more vital pieces like the leader didn't make it. I had to reposition some of the branches to assume new the new leader and raffia in places where the bends were substantial. Cleaned the bark up and added some jins and shari to create interest.
The soil definitely needed to be replaced and by repotting, I was able to work the tree down into a more shallow pot for a few years and it has recovered very well.
After a long 4 years, this tree is finally in an interim pot and I'm pretty pleased with how this tree has progressed.
