Some recent collections of Gray Oak (Quercus grisea) from my property in cedar Crest, NM. They all seem to be alive and ready to push. 1 has already pushed. The bark on all of these is spectacular with great amounts of lichen on the trunk. This greenery is not moss and doesn’t have the same detrimental affects. To me it adds far more of an appearance of age as this stuff takes decades and decades to grow. The clump is 4.5 ft (1.3 meters) tall or so. These ones are slender trunked, but there are quite a few beefy 4” plus trunk specimen present. I just want to work on collecting the thinner stuff, reveiw the results then adjust accordingly for next spring.

Thanks! I really like that one too! It pushed some buds and tiny leaves but then they dried up about 3 weeks after. There seems to be new buds that are viable and slowly pushing. But it’s uncertain. So many more clumps on my property though and these were a great learning lesson in collecting gray oak on my property. The field dirt was a bitch and the tap roots were large. That second single trunk is still in good shape and I’ve got a little shohin also in great shape.

Hope it makes it for you. I've never been very successful collecting good size trunks with anything other than crape myrtle and Acer rubrum - and those are pretty fool proof.

My neighbors have a couple huge redbuds that sprout seedlings all over the place. They bought the house this last year so some of the seedlings they cut back on a yearly basis have been there a while and are not really seedlings anymore. They said I’m free to dig em all up. So I did.

Last week I had already dug a few small ones that were in my yard and put them in small nursery cans with pumice and didn’t remove any leaves. Those are not doing well. So with this recent batch I’m trying something different. I removed all of the foliage, packed 3 to a nursery can and black bagged the bunch. Hoping to get them to sweat some buds.

Here’s a few coral beauty cotoneaster that i worked. what i would consider the tail end of major work for any trees for the season, other than mugo, that I’d feel comfortable doing. I’m confident these will flush through in no time. Both were only $24 and have great movement and trunk texture, for cotoneaster that is.

On the first tree I was tempted to remove the secondary trunk, but it had formed quite a few roots from naturally ground layering, and rather than get rid of that, i figured id make it a highlight.

The second tree also has great character and a decent base. As cotoneaster straight from nursery stock, i consider these to be great finds in both trunk Size and character.

I also took a boat load of cuttings from both of these to use for a multitude of reasons. One of which being an eventual group planting inspired by a recent post from @Paulpash . Any chance you could share a better pic of that group you put together Paul?

Great finds on those cotoneasters! Love the graceful bending trunk on that second one.

Are these eastern redbud? My mom has a big one in her yard and little ones come up all over the place. I have nabbed a few and planted them around to see what they'll do. Love the flowers on them for sure. Hope they work out for you.

Im not certain the variety but redbud are some of my favorite trees. I had a pretty badass redbud specimen bonsai from early in my pursuits in the hobby. It was so different and pretty dam cool. I Killed that tree years ago in my ignorance. Ive wanted to try and grow out others ever since.

Too bad about your old tree. Happens to us all. I've never seen a nice one so it would be cool if someone succeeds. I always look forward to the spring show that redbuds and flowering dogwoods put on around here.

You can see it on the left there. I repotted to quickly and did not keep it watered enough over the winter.

Thinking about the crowns.....one seems "heavy" one seems to come forwards/in and one seems a little chunky as well.
