Pruning/Pinching JBP Like Single Flush Pines

A couple of months back, a member of our local club asked me why a person couldn't just treat
Japanese black pines like single flush pines. I didn't have a good answer, but I'm sure there is one.
The specific issue in question was decandling.

You absolutely could, and the pine wouldn't care. However you wouldn't get the universal short needles and the tight internodes. You would be getting two pushes of growth each year - with the first push having longer needles than the second.
