Here is a picture I took today and she sure is putting out some leaf growth.
The tree is also loaded with flower buds already so not sure what’s going on as she’s no to flower until March.
either I am doing something right or she’s confused as about what month we’re are in LOL

I also started to feed N1.5 P9 K 4.5 fertilizer organic.

Well I wanted to report that I needed to remove the wire from the lower right side of the tree I wrapped in the first week of April. The reason being the wire had done it’s job and it started to scare the branch. To my surprise it’s was very easy to remove the wire and the raffia no issues at all. What did surprise me was the bark underneath was in pristine condition and appears to be extremely healthy and shinny. I would high recommend this technique to anyone. Any scratches you see was me using the pliers a little to close LOL

I am hoping that the trunk split I did will looks it’s as nice but won’t know until end of February beginning of match after she drops her flowers.
Enjoy the pics

I don't think following the "mume vs incisa" advice is that significant. I do things "out of season" to all my trees all the time. That sounds more cavalier than it is because I do put a lot of thought into things and often adjust accordingly. Or, honestly, sometimes I just need to dare the tree to live so I can recover some space :{

I guess what strikes me is I never equated "wiring" with "trunk spliting". I'm not sure many would...but I don't see mention of trunk splitting in your schedule :( I doubt many hobbiests even own a trunk splitter...though that may be a bad assumption on my part??

...but what's done is done...let the fun begin! I am very curious how this will turn out...please keep us posted!

From my experience, any problems won't really set in until the heat does. Even then, I think the biggest danger is winter. Cherries are known for bark splitting from frost/cold and yours will be unlikely to have healed well by then. You might plan on rewrapping the trunk before winter. 1) to see how it is doing and 2) to keep some extra protection from drying winds and cold until it heals well. You might look into a trunk wrap that breathes well for the winter. I'd let the top run as wild as it can this year as well.

Anyway...those would be my near term concerns. Down the road there may be some scarring issues to deal with...but deal with those when the time comes ;)

so I took your advice today and peeled back all the raffia, tap and wire to see how it looked. Well I am glade I did as she would have had a hard winter. I do see the tree had healed in some spots nicely but in others it needed more time. So I added cut paste new raffia, tape and wire. Only time will tell if she will heal as I will pull everything off in March of 2022 after she has dropped her flowers.

Well it’s official the first snow fall for Staten Island NY. It’s going to be cold out there this year. Still have one leaf hanging on.

additional comparison. Here a picture of one of my mumes (top) and incisa (bottom) a few minutes ago:

Are we in the same zone or what? I take it my buds are either dead on my mume or just leaf buds. Thank you so much for the pics. I will try and get a side by side of mine tomorrow.

Nice plant.

But forgive me, I think maybe you should get rid of the first low branch and perhaps aim for a kind of "flowering literati"...

Or air-layer the top, and use the bottom branch to make a cascade.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread, gorgeous tree.

My
nursery stocks been out in flower for about a week now, absolutely stunning.

However I managed to mix up repotting rules for prunus with azalea, any idea if they can have successful root reduction(50%+) after flowering? 🤔
