If you have roots growing through the bottom the tree is healthy,

I missed this jumping to JWI's quote!

This tree is surely happy.
Lotta water Lotta fert.
And I recently moved it to a higher pedestal, as my cucumber was eating it, and beginning to shade it out.

I even have been seeing some tips out of the side of the basket!

I'll post some new pics here in a few.

I still think you need to remove the downward growing needles which I don't think has been done enough yet. Just the downward growing needles. You could do the top also but that's not necessary and it is important that you keep the side way growing needles. Keep the side way growing needles. Remember: Keep the side way growing needles. Then leave it alone for a year except to get it into a colander.
The whole paragraph.
For better context, since it was all the way back in page 4.

All right....

Since Vance said it was healthy...
Because I agree...
And since this thing needs some direction already.

I tried to slow down some of the side I don't plan on using. To keep it from swelling my knuckle. Though I have absolutely no real idea as to where this is going yet. Except to be dope as Hell someday so I can make Smoke smoke it!

I want to get the rest of this left side off next year.20160807_180152.jpg

And for records....

The trunk under the knuckle.
20160807_172533.jpg

My sacrifice.
20160807_172703.jpg

And the branch I will use to make a cascade if it goes that way.20160807_172744.jpg

Vance....

Pretty soon I may be able to get a picture that makes sense for a full view...

As of now, before a righteous direction....

It's just a mess!

Next year should give us the path.

You have to sit down when it's quite in fact and quite in your mind and just look at the tree. Put it on a turn table and just look at it, turn it a little and look and turn it some more and look at it. Don't think about the tree too much just enjoy the tree. If you are a point where you don't plan on doing anything you have nothing to lose but your sanity. If you do things right and you can get in the right state of mind it is possible you will start seeing things in the tree you did not see before, solutions to problems you did not know you had.

I know this sounds like just so much crap but in all Bonsai is still an art, and if that part of your psyche is not turned on much will remain unseen.

Sorry to bounce you around from the train to here.

I think I got some pictures that will make sense now!

I removed all of my old stubs.
And took off one more branch.
Cut a few needles.

The lower left sacrifice is bound to go.
The one above it Will stay, I think it will backbud next year.

A possible upright tree here.20160901_103350.jpg

But that seems kind of boring...

So I'm kickin this around too.

I can Probly get this triangle started next year.
I would have to make a giant cliff face to jam this in the side of....
But I think it would be really cool.

Sorry but I am dense as a brick bat. It seems to me you may be trying to build a profile from branches that do not yet exist?

Me too! What?

Lol!

They are more or less there...but eventually I'd like to use what buds closer to the trunk.

OK, then you are going to have to be careful you do not remove too much growth trying to get the tree to that point. Understand that you may be fighting the tree the whole way. You are currently trying to get the tree to do something it may not be equiped to be. I am not a big fan of forced bonsai. I think (JMHO) that a tree will start to tell you what it wants to be as opposed to being acquiescent to being jammed into a mold.

@Vance Wood , I want to deal with this knuckle reverse taper.

I read the "thickening around a Shari", so I question....

Should I reduce the globe of holy?

Or introduce a Shari to the part just below it?20170305_080018.jpg

This may be my one move this year.

Eventually the knuckle will grow itself out if the top growth is allowed to develop. It is possible to chew away some of the knuckle with knob cutters or a saw, and hope it heals well. Either way it is probably going to take about five years to resolve adequately. Here again the same problem with the photo exists. I need to see this thing in context with itself. It's nice to see a problem in detail but sometimes the problem is a lot worse when seen in its relation to the rest of the tree, sometimes it is not.

I'm sorry you did post some more detailed photos earlier. I will take a look at them. Is there a reason for the stones on the surface, maybe you have told me but I have now forgotten.

These stones are to keep borrowers out..
Something was burying things in other pots.

I fully don't expect you to have to go back to see pics.

My question is answered enough.

I do intend to grow out the knuckle anyway.

Whatever happens, It seems so far I'm going to have the best growth on this yet!

Which makes me want to do nothing!

Thanks for Championing these!

Having recently read on the train, that if kept buried, these Mugo will throw surface roots, I'm kind of reexcited about this guy.

Not to mention I may get more extended growth this year than it had in the beginning.

Even the weakest branch, it has more buds than needles!20170319_155413.jpg

Fully.20170319_155431.jpg

That left branch is definitely coming off this year.
That will complete "prep work".

Next year I can start nurturing a trunkline, and maybe some branches.

Thank You Lord Mugo, without you I would not get to witness this!

aviary-image-1492944289949.jpeg 20170421_062754.jpg

Pine growth is amazing!

I see and pick at a pine or 2 at ballgames and such....
But Unlike the river's edge trees I get to see grow, I don't get to see pines grow much....

What a great feeling!

Feels like art!

Thanks Vance!

Thanks Ma Nache!
