So I did the homework of finding best indoor grow lights and it seems Ceramic metal halide and Quantum board LED’s are all the rave now.
I went with an HLG 135 v2 quantum board. They are neat.288 light emitting diodes made by Samsung.I bought the 4000k that is made for veg growth.
Turns out the US Forestry service has done experiments confirming LED’s outperform other lights consideralbly when getting an early start on their tree seedlings.

I am going to conduct an experiment of my own in mid October starting JBP about 5 months early with seedling cuttings and everything.
These Quantum boards are cool.
I do not like the goofy purple and red led from other companies.
The pictures are a V1,The V2 just came to the market in May and have Samsung led’s

Really cool!

Haven't tinkered with LEDs or LECs, I recently bought a 600-1000w dimmable HPS/MH. Before, when I was shopping around for a new light, the guy at the hydro shop was trying to turn me on to LECs. Twice the price as normal HID lights but so much cooler to run, less energy, and with an excellent spectrum. But after talking to some people who use LECs, their opinion was that the light output wasn't as good as HPS or MH and the growth wasn't as full and they never really saw the vigor that they saw with the normal HIDs (granted they weren't growing bonsai, but herbacious plants;)).

The guy at the shop also said similar things for the LEDs, super low power consumption, excellent spectrum, but lower light output than HIDs. He warned me against buying cheap Chinese made LEDs, but said if you buy from a reputable company, they were well worth it. I'm sure Samsung makes some top notch LEDs!

But if you're only using it for seed starting than it doesn't really matter if the light output is a little less than typical HIDs.

Here is my recent adventure with indoor growing, but unfortunately I had to shut it down to make room for a roommate :/ https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/ficus-experiment.27965/

I'm very interested in your experience with that light, I just can't afford a good LED light... Keep us posted!

There is a lot of activity in horticultural LED's right now. The industry is growing 75%+ per year! Just look at all the big players - Philips, Osram, Cree, Luxeon... If they can grow roses under LED's the future looks bright, indeed!

My local hydro shop suggested the lec’s also, they were a bit pricey.
After doing my own research I went with the Quantum board.
I was also warned of the cheapo led’s too lol
The HLG 135 is equal to a 250 watt mh

That is very interesting how they can make custom wavelength LED ,for commercial use.
It is only a matter of time before it is available retail.
I still cannot get used to the purple and red plants though. That is why I went with the white light ones from HLG/Samsung.
I guess if I new the wavelength was a custom wavelength for my plant I could get used to it lol.

I have the Root Farm RF4501 lights from Home Depot. I haven’t used them yet (besides just testing to make sure they work). They seem to put out plenty of bright light. I guess I’ll find out how well they actually work for bonsai this winter.

Finally got my QB 288

These were delayed shipping.Apparently the grow store was very busy filling orders for the V2.
Got it hung and will just need a table or something.
Really bright!
It has a dimmer, but I do not have the correct screwdriver to adjust it, so it may be all the way up....I don’t know yet.
Dimmer seems a great idea really for various growth stages.

It’s not very big. How many plants are you going to grow ? You will need the light fairly close to get good growth. Probably 18”.

It has a footprint of 3x3 for veg.
Light seems fairly good for 2x2.
I will just have an ordinary 72 cell flat or two which will fill up a 2‘ x 2’.
Just pine seedling cuttings for now for early start to next season. I read you could run it pretty close. The LEDs don’t emit a lot of heat it all goes to the heat sink on top.
I think you’re right on with 18 inches somewhere around 18”
The website states anything from 12 to 24 inches 18 seem to get the best even coverage for a 2 x 2

Does anyone have any spectrum/PAR data for the Samsung LEDs in the Quantum Boards?

I see 3000K and 4000K color temperatures, but since these are LEDs, they can put out "white" light without necessarily covering the full spectrum. So, I believe that color temperature doesn't say anything about how much light is being put out in the photosynthesis wavelength bands (400-700nm).

There is par data on hlg’s website for each qb,,,,the kits
