Thanks @Forsoothe! for the Idea!

Just when I thought I was done with projects...I found this San Jose yesterday for a steal!!! 2.5-3 inch inch trunk, and height under 18 inches. Water was pushing hard, so I just guy wired a few branches down. It will get completely wired during summer dormancy.

I can’t believe this was not intentionally grown as a bonsai, that is a pretty textbook informal upright for a random nursery find.

SJ #2

I bought the last two SJ junipers they had at the nursery this morning. Since this beast had a nice root system, it got it in a larger Chinese pot. Besides cleaning out the dead, I am leaving the foliage alone for recovery.

I put sphagnum moss on after I took the photos. One more to go!

Last but not least, a killer Kifu SJ with a 3 inch trunk, 5-6 inch nebari and some great taper!

These three brothers have been doing well while in lockdown the past few months. Here is an update on all three.

The first informal upright tree got a redesign at the end of May. After cutback, it was growing vigorously and seemed to laugh at the work I did.

The second tree That I reduced the rootball to the size of a softball exploded with new growth and didn’t skip a beat. Severe root reduction and leaving the foliage 100% alone works well for nursery junipers from what it seems!

The third tree that I am nicknaming Double Dragon also got a redesign at the end of May.

The first informal upright responded the best to the work I did. I am letting it completely bush out so I can get it in a small rectangle in the spring. Next pruning/restyling next summer 2021

My favorite of the three, but I went a bit hard setting primaries. The left side is growing well, but the right side needs to get stronger. I am letting it grow out and completely bush out before revisiting next summer. No repot in 2021!

The last tree had a lot of long and thick branching, so I cut it back to smaller more interior pieces and left it alone. I am either going to style it like it is next season, or maybe graft it with Kishu. More to follow!

When was it that you did these cut backs?
I’m just asking because this time of year I’ve experienced the best response to hard pruning junipers.

They’re looking good, but would be more cautious with the pruning and styling
next year after next years repotting, limiting to just thinning and minimal pruning.
Pruning for correction of flaws or errors a branch may be sporting.

The first two were cut back at the end of May after the new growth hardened off. I thinned and wired the primary branches, so the next styling in a year from now will be just like you said correcting flaws and pruning/setting secondaries.

The first one didn’t skip a beat, that’s why I’m going to repot in the spring and leaving the foliage alone until the summer. The second one didn’t respond as well, so I’m skipping the repot this year.

It’s a painting I did of Dwight Schrute from the office 😂

Chalk that up to the creepiest shot I ever seen on the internet! Lol! nice!

Looking forward to watching these trees.

The “traditional” looking tree in the Anderson flat responded very vigorously, so it will get repotted in the spring. I did some light thinning and wiring before putting it away for the winter.

These pictures are only 6 months apart!!! 🤤

The other (with the big jin) was a little slower, so it will continue to grow out. I thinned the left side, and mostly left the right side alone. I need that right side stronger to push the movement/asymmetry to the right.

Nice; I missed this post this spring.

I found a decent one as well, but have only repotted it, and removed a few branches (a couple were already snapped/dieing).

New Front (to make that straight sub-trunk look a little better)?

If it survives, I'll try some styling. I'm still a newb; only a couple years into the hobby.

I dig the new front, much more movement from the side branch and trunk!
