Hello everyone,

I started this thread to document the development of my Quercus ilex grown from acorn since 2017.

I started a thread about this tree when I (unsuccessfully) tried an air layer.

Thread 'Chasing unicorns Q. ilex air layer' https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/chasing-unicorns-q-ilex-air-layer.50424/

My future plan is to chopp the trunk (red line) and use the branch to the left as the new leader. I will not chop the trunk this season though, maybe next spring if it's vigourous enough. When I feel it has regained it's strength I'll change the soil and begin root working. I only reduced the tap root when it was 2 years old.

Feel free to chime in.

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I checked the base of the tree under the soil line and was quite pleased. It has a nice base, about 2,75 inches in diameter with fairly flat roots. It's not a killer nebari but, for an oak, I'm pleased with it.

It's pushing the second growth this season.

Well, I’m a fool ahahah

It took 7 years to find that this tree isn’t a Quercus ilex, as was stated on the ID tag of the tree from whom I took the acorns.

I’m almost certain this is a Quercus coccifera. Common name is Kermes oak or, in Portuguese, “Carrasco”.

I like it even more now!

Best regards

I might chop the trunk lower that I initially planned since the tree popped a bud in a very good location on the trunk.
