This is what I was thinking, that there could be a difference between the inexpensive and the expensive rocks…
don’t buy bags of lava at Walmart
elsewhere most any come in a clear bag, if not visually super porous skip it

I recently bought a big bag of lava rock for decoration and lining the bottom of my pots. They were very cheap, I bought the black rocks for $9 and the red were only about $6. The rocks range from about .5" to 1.5". Can I simply smash theses with a mallet (if possible lol) in order to use them in my bonsai substrate? Or could I even use them at their current size? And what about picking out the smallest rocks to use, like I said about half an inch, maybe a centimeter. Thanks in advance :)
3/8" is about maximum size for big trees. Personal trees 1 1/2'-3' use 3/16"-5/16". Smaller about 1/8"-3/16";). Pumice cheap at yard supply place and sift at home. Also sift commercial Bonsai substrate when used.
