Hi all

I'm fairly new to starting out on this hobby. I wanted to ask if you do a trunk chop and only get low branches to sprout (below the bottom half of the tree) and didn't get any new leaders this season. If the cambium is still green below the trunk chop, will the tree develop new shoots at the top of the tree next season?

Thanks

It depends on the species of tree and when you did the chop but I would guess the chances are not good. That is why a chop is better done at an existing node or branch. Perhaps you could use one of the sprouts you did get as the new leader even if it is not as high as you hoped?

It is a good idea to put your location or at least your hardiness zone in your information as answers to a lot of questions depend on that.

Hi. It depends on many things. What bspecies of tree is it? When was it cut, what season, also where are you situated?

Thanks for the quick responses.

Tree: Trident Maple
Location: South Africa
Time of Trunk Chop: Just after the beginning of Spring

If I scratch the very top of the tree, right by the trunk chop, the cambium is still green below. That is after about a month and a half after the trunk chop.

Edit: Just to explain the second pic is just a general mockup of the future design. The first pic is where it currently stands. I'm hoping to get a leader akin to the area in the second pic next season? Do you think that's a possibility?
