I am making my own bonsai mix diatoms earth , fir bark and some perlite ..was wondering if it's on if my fir bark pieces are bigger and if this will effect anything. I can't find any smaller

smaller particles sink and settle to some degree. Doesn't mean it's a deal breaker, just monitor things at repotting and see what's going on.

Looks like you're using bark marked for orchid use. Most local places I've seen only carry medium to large sized bark. If it bugs you and you want to take the trouble, you can get a local "nursery mix" that is a mix of composted bark and peat that you can sift the fines out of. However the guys who answered you above are more experienced than I and If they say it will work as is then there ya go. :)

You could put the bark in a bin, pound it with the end of a 4x4 or whatever and sift for the desired particle size
