I am relatively new to bonsai and have a question about propagating cuttings indoors during the winter. I don't have a particularly nice set up, but I do have a couple of grow lights and a humidifier. My question concerns bottom heat. I don't have a heat mat, but was wondering if a radiator in my apartment could be useful so long as it was paired with the humidifier. Would the dry air from the radiator still end up desiccating the cuttings?

I would worry that the heat would be sporadic, too hot now then not hot enough later. Even regulated bottom heat is better. Seedling heat mats are pretty cheap.

Just my 2 cents: I never used heat mats, and my cuttings root just fine.
Heat mats speed up the entire process with just a week or two. But since it's still winter, it might just be better to take it slow. Where are you going to put the ones that take hold and start to thrive if your setup might not be ideal?
I put some cuttings on ice, just so that I have that extra time, meaning that it's spring directly after rooting.
