Has anyone tried to make a bonsai out of a redbud?
The explosion of purple flowers in early spring are beautiful.

I have some seeds I'm propagating and would like to know if the leaves reduce.

Thanks

I had one for long years, it was a group planting. It never bloomed in captivity. Leaves can be reduced somewhat by repeated removal of large leaves. But if you can't get it to flower why bother...

Good point, the whole purpose is to enjoy the flowers!

I was gonna say, the ones as my work that don't sell we obviously keep. There's one from 2014 still in the same pot and it seems to bloom more and more each year. Not sure why it'd be difficult as a bonsai other then leaf size and that they don't bud back on old wood reliably.

This came out of a 3 gallon big box store pot about 2 months ago. Chopped it down last fall as it had the two low branches. Which ever branch is the weakest will get the chop too.

Probably be a 2-3 years before there is any chance of flowering.
