Redwood Carving - Some Benefits

Here is a redwood I bought at the REBS member sales area. It was quite boring, and the foliage was much too tall. I cut it down about 1' and wired it (sorry, no before pics). Then I carved it much further and burned the inside. The uninteresting deadwood area is now a key feature of the tree, and closely resembles what you would find in nature in the redwood forests of California and Oregon. So, which do you like better?

Nice job Brian with a difficult piece. Nice job carving, but you can see tool marks like in pic 4. I would've used a Dremel with a sandpaper flap, or just hand sandpaper to smooth over the tool marks. Just my thought...

Very true, the tool marks are not exactly attractive. Once I burn the inside, typically I'll go over the whole thing with a stiff wire brush and knock down those tool marks, then burn again if needed. This time I got a little lazy and I guess it shows.

Have to admit, I've seen trees just like this hiking out there. Good job, how is your other doing these days?

Thanks Judy! All the others are doing very well. Most of my work is at Jim Gremel's place, and he has been working on some of them for a few years now, so those are almost ready to show!
