I came across this 2008 book "Remarkable Trees of Virginia" in the bookstore over the weekend. I have to say it's an unexpected "must-have" for Va. bonsai artists (and bonsai folks in general just because it shows a lot of big, old trees).

It contains histories (and some of the history is eye-opening) of some of the biggest, unusual and typical trees in Virginia. Virginia Tech is keeping a record for the project of all trees nominated for "remarkable" in the state.

I know a handful of the trees in it, particularly the huge old white oak in Nelson County. I hadn't heard of many of the others.

Not to mention this elm--

and this sycamore

Some people are going to the locations of many of them. This person has a lot of photos from trips--scroll to the bottom for additional trees--including a literati oak...

Thanks for the head up. I'll have to get this book as well.

Are there any trees from Maymont in the book? I like to visit the Japanese garden there but there are also a bunch of big, old impressive oaks, magnolios, tulip poplars, elms, etc. It's fun just to walk around and look at the trees.

There are dozens of trees from Richmond, Petersburg and the Tidewater, some excellent photos of Bald Cypress in the Great Dismal and Lake Drummond

BTW, the book ain't cheap. $50--I got it as a birthday present...
