Removing dried pitch

I got an austrian pine from a garden center last night and there was a lot of pitch that had drained down the trunk from some damage awhile back. What is the best way to clean that off?

I know my step dad uses rubbing alchohol to get sap off of his truck. I cannot however verify it's safety for the tree. I would think it would be ok in small doses.

Turpentine is made from pine sap. It will dissolve it.

Depending on how much is oozing out, but I find that keeping the effected area exposed to the sun helps it dry up and break off in time.
