Repotting advice for Pinus sylvestris

Hey treelovers,
About two months ago, I was super lucky to take over a friend’s bonsai collection. That kicked off a serious repotting marathon – most of the trees had been sitting in regular soil for years and had never even heard of modern substrate. 😅

This Pinus sylvestris in the photos, though, I haven’t touched yet. It’s by far the biggest project I’ve got. For now, I’m just keeping an eye on how it’s doing and will probably repot it next spring. I've adjusted my watering to the current soil – surprisingly, it still drains quite well, and I’m watering about every 2–3 days.

The tree was collected many years ago in Sweden as a yamadori. I don’t know the full story yet, but I’m hoping to get more background soon. It’s about 1.10m tall, in a ~30-liter pot, and it’s packed with candles. I’ve thinned most down to two and shortened the longer ones. A few weeks back, I also removed all the male pollen sacs. There are still four old cones from past seasons hanging on the tree and I love them. In the future I will try to get the foliage closer to the trunk by some temperate cuttings in late summer, hoping for some new backbuds - I know there are too much branches for a final design.

How do you guys think it’s doing right now health-wise? Is it correct to repot in the next spring or should I overthink this (I am living in Eastern part of Germany, should be Zone 8a)?
Do you have special recommandations?

Cheers, Tobsi

The tree looks happy and healthy, since you don't know the plant I think you should do the minimum works this year ( energy balance), and see how the plant react.

From what I've seen, Scots pine put out quite a few back buds after pruning. I would remove the top third at least.

The back budding is from heavy feeding and massive amount of foliage, not really from pruning. The tree needs to be full of energy first. Heavy fall fertilization is recommended if the tree is overall healthy.
