This one suffered in the recent heat dome so it’s been recovering in partial shade. Defoliation, and interesting enough it had many small back-buds….will feed it and look forward to seeing it in the fall.

The difference between looking at an ordinary tree behind a rock and the tree as posed against the rock and the two accenting each other's interesting movements is night and day.

Spring Update,
Even though it’s ramification was improving I wanted to explore the roots and perhaps lift the entire piece higher in profile. While exploring the condition of the roots the limestone piece broke into pieces so I removed them only to find that the condition of the roots were not that healthy :( . I teased the roots out, removing a lot of dead clumps, especially around the edges and decided to replace the tree back onto the slab with lots of fresh soil and let it recover before I try to reduce the size of rootball and place it into a pot down the line.

I like the composition. Did/does that sedum have shallow roots that don't compete with the tree?

Also what was that ferny looking stuff in one of the earlier pix with the sedum?

:)

Thanks Mike,
The native sedum had shallow roots and its habit of rooting from any part touching the soil allows it to spread quickly. No “ferns” but the variegated plant had much deeper roots. No companion plants from here on in. Hard to believe it’s been 14 years since it was rescued.
