Has anybody successfully collected out of a road cut? I found a couple pinon today that had great style, but I'm afraid they have too long of tap roots in the clay. I know that collecting from rock is best, but this certainly caught my eye.

Nice specimen, but the sandy areas around here cause them to send taproots into the earth that one can never get out. Usually those taproots are twice the length of the tree.
You might be lucky, but the chance is pretty slim.

As Wires said, unlikely you will get this one successfully. Park the car and see what you can find further in.

I have lots of those where I collect and the above answers are correct unfortunately.

Ya. that's what I was afraid of. There were several of these nice specimens. Glad I didn't start digging.
