First pass on this truly ancient Rocky Mountain juniper collected by the man, the myth, the legend Mr. Randy Knight. What started off as my next video, quickly turned into nearly six full days of wiring and no footage shot. At a certain point I decided I wanted to start the year off getting back to basics. Just me and the tree. Thankful I made that call as the concentration and attention to detail this tree required nearly killed me.

Gonna take a break for a few days and then onto the next.

I concur. Great background. Beautiful tree; I love what you've done! But the background sort of distracts from the composition of the tree so it's hard, for me, anyway, to discern the finer details.

Styled it in a friend’s studio so I was working with the background he had. After I left he threw up a black curtain and snapped this one. Angle isn’t quite right, but at least you can see the silhouette better. @Dav4

Very nice! Now how about one in color so we can see the live vein? :p
Live vein is on the backside of the tree. Sometimes you have to sacrifice showing it enter the soil from the front. The other side of the tree was just so much less impressive than this one. Ugly line, no aged deadwood, and rendered the large Jin at the top untenable in the design. Would’ve been pointing the viewer right in the face. Aiming to put this tree on a krizovensky rock which should provide all the visual stability necessary to anchor the composition.

Here’s a pic I snapped w my phone in color.

Thanks for the spin at the end of the video. That jin on the right stuck out to me as too straight, but I can see it does have some movement now.

That one on the bottom right? It has that really nice epicormic knuckle at the end which is why I left it. Does feel a bit too horizontal and straight from the current front. May have to eliminate it to get the tree into a more appropriate container next year.

Yeah, that one. Looks like it’s doing one of these:
