I was driving to the Oregon coast and I saw a hand painted sign on the side of the road that just said “Bonsai” I had to get where I was going and didn’t stop at first, but I found the nursery on my way back. I didn’t have that much cash on me, so this is what I bought.

It’s got a few issues and a lot of potential.

How hard can I prune this thing without killing it.

It’s only been in this flat for less than a year.

I think you should get a good look under the dirt and see where the roots go. might influence a possible front and then you get some kind of foundation to build your design from. Looks interesting, this an Elm?

Chinese elm.

Given that it was only pulled out of the earth this winter. I am reticent of any root shenanigans.

He was only referring to checking roots coming out of trunk. Not digging up;).
