I have some Japanese maples that could use some root grafts, so does it matter if the seedlings are green or red? I know it may be a dumb question, but I’m curious.
Any JM will graft with any other JM. Makes no difference if they are red or green leaf or any other configuration.
Stronger, Faster growing types should graft quicker and better and the roots may thicken a bit faster?
Not usually. Most JM roots are a similar colour and texture, even if the trunk bark colour is different. Leaf colour differences do not always mean different bark.
If you had some seedlings that did have different colour or texture to the roots I would avoid using those where they are likely to be seen but I can't recall seeing that in any JM I've grown.
