I'm getting some ume scions to graft onto my apricot tree and was wondering if it might be worth trying to root a piece or two?

Anyone ever try such a thing? Scions will be hardwood cuttings, not the best for rooting but it might work?

It's only $4 per foot, nothing to really lose if it doesn't work.

I would be interested in rooting ume as well. I have a tree in the garden that is grafted on the understock. Would like to take some cuttings and root them so that I can start few bonsai trees. However I hear they root pretty poorly. Any advice on getting higher success ratio? Like should I take 1-year or older wood, should I take them now in the winter and have them mature in cold wet sand or cut after flowering when there's leaves or ... ?
