Last Fall I dug a huge pomegranate out of my grandmas backyard. It was about 15’ tall and I just hacked it back to a large stump and put it in a wooden box with pumice and let it sit.

I also made some large cuttings out of a couple of branches intersections, I thought maybe they would make interesting clumps. They rooted out fine, just by sticking em in some lava rock and putting them in a plastic bag.

I just wired some structure into one of em. Theyre gonna need some heavy carving down the road.

I also have a twisted pomegranate I’ve been ground growing for the last 3 years. I’m gonna dig it up in the Spring. I need a cool pot for it, something with some yellow red or orange, I think.

These look great and remind me of when my mom told their gardener to cut back a ten year old pomegranate that only started fruiting in its tenth year. 🥲 I should get a photo of the stump t see if it is worth bonsaiing. It was cut down to two feet andI know it has back budded a ton since.

These are really nice.
I love that trunk line!

I’ll be watching 👍

How much was your shipping?

Also, don't you find it ironic that you can't find them in a zone 10 where pom's thrive, and had to order them from PA?

Definitely worth it... that's one thing I plan on doing once the new place is finished. Those and princess persimmon (sexed) are very difficult to come by. Most of the pp on sale are seedlings and you won't tell the sex until a few years has pass.

I dug down to check out the nebari I’ve been cultivating on this twisted pomegranate. It was a pencil thin whip when I got it, and I grew it through it board with a hole in it to get radial roots. After that I mounted it to a board Ebihara style. Seems to have paid off.

Did you need a tractor to dig that up? That thing is massive. Also I did not know cuttings that large would survive, great work.

What time of year do you take your cuttings?

Did you ever decide on this?
