Ryan Neil's Approach to Approach Grafting For Junipers

I don't subscribe to Neil's live series, but I did happen across a teaser on youtube.
In that teaser, it looks like Ryan grafts junipers not by making a channel, as is often
done with approach grafting, but by sort of slicing a branch and scion almost in half along
the grain and then taping the two together with electrical tape. In this way, I guess the
new branch will have the same diameter as the old branch. Is this how most of you do
approach grafts with junipers?

To clarify: Ryan does not use channels for grafting onto a branch but for grafting into larger trunk sections, along the live vein.

Here are screenshots from grafting roots onto a Rocky Mountain Juniper.
