Over the last 6 months a lot of bark has fallen off my Sageretia Theezan. I know this is normal for this species (Bonsai Empire: "The bark is quite smooth and dark brown with with irregular patches peeling away, leaving light brown spots of young bark. "). My concern is that it has a full ring around the trunk that has peeled off.

I can't tell what layer remains underneath: sapwood, cambium or phloem? If the phloem is gone then I know that the roots will die eventually. Does anyone know what the lightwood layer that is now exposed is?

It will just be the outer dead layer, nothing to worry about.

Normal. The cambium layer is under the light layer remaining on the trunk.
