Have you lost any branches from the removal of the buds? I’ve always let mine grow out, only cutting during the spring. I haven’t lost a branch yet, but I know others have.

I had a lot of dieback when I collected the trees, and even lost some of the bigger trees completely, but once the roots got established, I found I could cut them aggressively, and they would only die back to the next active bud.
