I have a question about satsukis. If you have a healthy satsuki, please chime in.

How far north and south, in the US, can satsukis survive and be healthy?

I keep a couple up in Massachusetts, but they need winter protection, they do not like less than 25 F. Generally keep mine cold for the winter, between 30 to 38 on an enclosed breezway. Sometimes depending on weather I need a little supplemental heat supplied by 2 liter soda bottles full of hot water placed around the protected trees. This is only required if we get 3 to 4 days of really cold weather.

If you are asking about satsuki in general, they certainly thrive on the west coast, all the way to the Canadian border. For a southern limit, we have customers in Florida. Mobile, Alabama is nicknamed "azalea city". Lots of satuski activity in Chicago.

Anyone out there from North Dakota?

But, if you are buying, you may want to get more specific. There are varieties that originated in the north of the Japan, that might not do well in southern climates, and vice versa.
