I found a pride of India that someone had removed out of season, its roots had been removed quiet extensively, I have put it into a pot to try get it to recover.

Would taking root hormone and mixing it with some water help it to grow new roots?

It might. Otherwise, treat it just like you were trying to root a cutting; make a humidity tent over it keep it in shade. There is a chance of saving it as long as it has foliage.

It may or may not.. How about a picture to see how bad those roots look

Pride of India covers three distinct and very different species -- only one is potentially bonsai potential.

Which do you have?

And rooting hormone applied to root tissue often INHIBITS new root formation.
