Does this look like scale? I found it on one of my ficus I'm developing. I haven't noticed it on any others and went ahead and cut the few leaves off that showed signs of the pest.

Keep that plant isolated from the others until you're sure you've eliminated them. You probably have immature scale on that plant as well, they are hard to see until they set up and create the adult scales like the ones in the photo. You may have to spray or use a systemic to control them.

Thanks guys. I'll have to figure out a way to isolate this one since they're all crammed together under lights on my shelves and go inspect all the plants more thoroughly for any signs of these.

Hi

If you've got scale, generally speaking there should be ants involved as well.....?

Fortunately scale is probably one of the easier pests to handle, white-oil works great.

Some over-spray hit a Celtis Sinensis that I recently bought, few days later I saw some black spots on the tree, turns out to be dead scale insects, camo was so good I never even saw them...

In my case at least, ants are the difficult issue, not their cattle....

Cheers

What is white oil?

Can you tell me what white oil is?I have a fukien tea that has scale that I cant seem to get rid of

You will need to get a smooth edged tooth pick and remove all the scale you see. Then you can use Bonide brand all seasons horticultural oil concentrate. However, you obviously cannot spray pesticides inside. If spraying outside is not an option, you can use the home made soap solution. Water, dish washing liquid, cooking oil and alcohol. I have never sprayed a ficus with this solution, however, I have never heard of any problems with it. Sometimes people defoliate their ficus then spray. It is highly effective. However, in this case, if it were my tree, I would keep it simple. Scrape off all the scale that you see and spray it with the homemade stuff. Then you can spray anywhere and don't have to worry about it. Also, check your other plants. Scale tends to spread.

Kinda on topic. I'm wondering if I have scale on a shimpaku juniper. It looks like it, but I'm wondering if anyone knew using my dilute LS spray I sprayed as a winter preventative might've caused this whiteness? None of my other trees show anything. Not a lot of experience so thought I'd ask. I've already wiped the tree clean. I've not had insect problems before during winter so this is strange.

Juniper scale is small, white and oval shaped. Here is a pic.

Ah, I see! That is pretty much what I picked off. I'll give it a shot of Neem oil today...and the surrounding trees in the hoop house. I wonder why the LS prev. spray didn't protect this this yr? Strange.
Thanks Rob
