Here is a Scott’s pine purchased off eBay. Last fall. I wired it to more of cascade style afterwards. It’s budding like crazy and I have more vision to future design. It’s going to stay small but I want to build ramification, and branch structure.
Thoughts?

Forgot to add , that I’ll grow. Branch from the top or a extra back bud under the top to grow out as a sacrificial branch. Perhaps also put in a grow basket or upsized box larger than be pot it’s in now.

Top branch or branch hanging down? Lower one YES! Upper one(apex)might be better brought back towards and over pot. It will help keep pot from falling over/prevent shading of Cascading branch. Small sprouts near junction may eventually become apex of tree above cascade.

9?
Cascade style can have apex or no apex or dead wood apex or no dead wood apex. There is no defined limits, or limits to where the apex occurs on the trunk. i see no problem with a small upright apex where your to branch is.
you will probably run into problems with different strength and vigor though. Higher areas of pine grow way faster than lower sections so that apex will grow and thicken while the cascade section will likely hardly grow at all. Adding a sacrifice shoot there will only aggravate the problem. This is not only light but also hormone and nutrient flow. You will need really good pruning and management skills to maintain this tree while it develops but you can always fall back on removing the cascade branch and reverting to informal upright if it all becomes too hard.

All the best with the project.

BTW I believe these are Scots pines as in Scotland rather than belonging to someone called Scott

It’s enjoying its deeper pot .. will get better growth, and letting the candles extend will help that with larger pot for the roots. Bark needs to age but that is way down the road. Might do selective pruning on lower branches just so the branch doesn’t thicken faster than the new top.

Upudatuh on this Scots pine. It came out of repot and root work unscathed. I realy like this angle too. Just gotta keep it developing, I only cut a few candles on apex , letting the drop branch alone and the upper branch that I’m trying to develop next. It just needs to start getting flakey bark. Prob some light wiring in fall.
