This Seigen Japanese Maple just arrived at my house. I ordered online from a Japanese Maple nursery in California. I scoured the internet through a dozen nurseries and finally got lucky with this one. It surprisingly already has good trunk movement and even the graft is good.

I plan on planting in the ground next spring and letting the trunk get some girth. There's a cross-crossing root which I'll cut off at the time of the ground planting. But other than that, I'm very happy with this tree!

The height is approximately 28 inches and the trunk is about .75 inches.

why wait? There is time for the roots to take hold and acclimate before the snow flies there. Into the ground with it!

I thought that doing anything to the roots would require to wait until spring? If it's different when ground planting, then I will definitely plant it now. Please advise. :)

Disturbing active roots is bad, slip potting into the ground and a slight agitation to any wrap arounds in the pot isn't much disturbance for a maple..DO IT!

Also, you should ground layer while in the ground.....Grafts are a terrible thing, especially when your ten years deep into a tree and find out that layering really is the only correction...

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll ground plant and do the ground layering this weekend.

Nice, do you have pictures?how does it do in the winter?
It did fine. It had a massive growth spurt in the late summer. There was several new 12 inch branches.

This will be it's second winter in ground so it's not fully established yet.
