The rule with hinoki is to remove the wire just as it starts to bite in ( just a lil).
I guess this is the rule with any tree.

For coniferous species you can leave the wire on quite long. Their bark smooths over wiremarks quite well. I would not hesitate to leave the wire un untill half of it has disappeared in the bark, and the wire starts to look flat

Use much larger wire than normal to make it easier to see. 1mm will work but gets buried and you tear up the foliage getting it off.
