My double serissa has started blooming after a little relief from the brutal summer heat. Just thought I'd share, it is my favorite serissa variety.

Pretty sure you can't use 'favorite' and 'Serissa' in the same sentence :p ;)

Congrats on getting my most hated species to bloom :D

I know that serissa has a rather dubious reputation here on this forum, and others, but I can't for the life of me see why. They grow like weeds. I have even had the trimmings that fall on top of the soil in the pot just take root. I have four different varieties.

A friend of mine bought one a couple months ago. Do you have any care tips I can share with him? I know your climate is different then ours here but I don't think your summers are all that much different. Hot 90-100+ degree days and really humid lol.
Where do you keep them how much sun do they get. Only thing that might be different is he will have to bring his inside once it gets cold.

Oh how often, and what type of fertilizer do you use?

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

I fertilize weekly during the summer with miracle grow (I usually buy whatever home depot or lowes has for a store brand) along with my other trees. I water daily, some recommend that you need to let them dry out in between watering, but I have found that they prefer to stay moist, not soaking wet, but moist. Due to the amount of rain that Mobile, Al gets, we use a really fast draining soil mix, so it is impossible to over water, the downside is that watering every day (sometimes twice) is a must.

They get full morning sun until around 11am, dappled sunlight until about 4pm, then full sun again until dark.

I leave them out during the winter and only bring them in when we expect really cold weather, (for us that is 20's). I have left a few out all winter with no ill effects, they lose all of their leaves, but flush out again when it gets warm in spring. If you move them inside, they will drop their leaves anyway, they don't like to change locations very much.

Hope it helps,

John

I have a few "snow rose" variety. I don't give them any special care (basically the same as John describes above), and they do fine. The smaller ones seem to like a little extra soil, so they're in deeper pots than similar size trees of other species. They flower if I let them grow for a little bit, but I've been pruning pretty regularly this summer.
