Hello Everyone,

I purchase 3 Sharp’s Pygmy’s about 2 months ago at a local nursery. I’ve been wanting one for some time now and was lucky enough to snag these three.

When I purchase them the the foliage was extremely dense as expected so I thinned them out a bit and placed them on the east side of my home. I live in Hershey PA zone 6b. We’ve had incredible amounts of rain these past few months and even though I try and shelter them under the eves of my roof; I believe they’re soil is too moist.

The leaves are falling off and they have some sort of white patches on them. They also exhibit sun scorching even though they on receive Eastern exposure to sun until about 11 am.

Am I right?

What should I do to try and revive them?

Thanks for any help,

Bobby

Bobby from the photos it looks like you have powdery mildew which is a highly treatable but also highly contagious fungus. It thrives in poorly ventilated areas coupled with wet or humid weather. Make sure of the following:

1.Spay tree with a fungicide like Bonide or similar. Make sure you also get the bottom of the leaves.
2. Ensure your tree always is placed on a well lit and ventilated area.
3. For the time being keep your maple out of the rain and refrain from watering the leaves.
4. Sharp's pymy is prone to getting fungus due to their overly dense canopies. In your case I am not too sure it was due to not enough thinning since it is still a young and relatively sparse tree. Most likely just bad placement in the garden.
5. Your tee should be fine. Leaves will drop but should not cause permanent damage. Powdery mildew rarely kills a tree.
6. Make sure you don't keep any other trees near it for now. The fungus should subside within a week or so after treatment.

Thank You Mach5!

I’m going to ordersome Bonide online expeditiously!
While I don’t have many good eastern facing spots to choose them ... I’m going to isolate them from my other trees! Is full afternoon sun to much for them right now?

Yes that will do! Your leaf scorching may be due to other causes. In my experience, sharp's are one of the most resistant cultivars against sun scorch. Adequately acclimated they take full sun very well. Just exercise proper husbandry and things will fall into place :)
Thanks for the diagnosis and recipe of care MACH5.i really appreciate your advice.
