I'm looking for some advice on how to handle the deep red coloring of deadwood I've come across on my Shimpaku.
While I was cleaning up some old shari and trying to get a little more depth and texture to it, I getting this deep red/brown coloring
deep in the deadwood. Do I let this deep coloring bleach out in the sun naturally for awhile or can I apply lime sulfur now?
I've attached a photo of the area on the Shimpaku in question.
Any sound advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Totally normal. It will lighten over time, but most people use lime sulfur, usually diluted with water 1:1. It can be applied at any time.

Much appreciated for the reply Brian!
So, should I keep going and add some more depth and texture to this colored area or wait until next year?

Since it’s dead, it doesn’t matter. You can keep picking at it, but I wouldn’t widen the Shari itself any more before next spring. Kathy Shaner would have you using gouges and tweezers to pull individual fibers within that space to add some character before treating it.
