There are grey areas showing up on the trunk & branches... is this a bad omen? (One of them is cut paste.)

Black spots and wrinkly bark are a sure sign a branch is dying. I don't think the upper part will survive but I too would do nothing on the parts with smooth bark, which apparently include the main trunk.
The lower part is a different story. It might be not affected at all and saved.

Thanks, Osoyoung. The wrap is back on and the tree is on a shelf in the garage. Hopefully the spring update will be positive.
