I recently purchased a Shishigashira from Home Depot that has severe splitting in the bark on one side of the tree. It seems to be on all major branches. Anyone know what caused this? The tree is otherwise healthy with vigorous new growth. 8D7F2136-B3DD-4E87-9293-9EEBED511BD9.jpeg36022872-5BB5-4FE9-84B6-1C3796232343.jpeg18139605-5321-49C2-A9E4-0ADC416F3994.jpeg

Sun burn possibly…. Or up against something hot like a black wall?

Those are large scars, not necessarily from the bark splitting. Maybe it rubbed up against a wall or some object for a prolonged period which caused the damage. It seems to be healing well and should close up the wound eventually at the rate it’s healing.
I agree with this. It looks more like mechanical damage than bark splitting. I've seen plenty of both and I am comfortable with this assessment. Looks healthy though so I wouldn't be too concerned.

The damage was definitely done by humans one way or another years back.
