Interesting blog post from Mirai on Young Choe, a specialist in Shitakusa and Kusamono (the difference is explained in the footnote at the bottom of the post). Young Choe is one of the unsung heroes of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. She creates beautiful compositions with native U.S. plants.

Interesting there is no forum category for Kusamono/shitakusa here...composing those can take as much, or more, thought and talent than bonsai.

Yup , I’m glad I have a great native plant nursery to create Kusamono and Shitakusa that would be appropriate to where the tree originated from … deep forest, farm land , riparian, mountain too , bog.. etc. examples for mountain shitakusa (sedum) and marsh / riparian (grasses and foam flower)

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. With all the bonsai work/study I have been up to, I really haven't given kusamano much thought. I will definitely work on this way before I ever take up photography for bonsai.

Good timing. I watched the Mirai video with her demo yesterday, and threw some yard weeds in a kintsugi @sorce pot today. It's missing a little something, but not a bad start:

Thank you!

I think, in fall, when a couple stems may yellow and fall forward, lining them up "appropriately" with that wonderful gold work, could prove quite complimentary to the right tree, or stand alone!
Or whatever shitakuku we aiming for!

I was in the Asia Hut studying Mud Men and $60 dead junipers, crystals and such for the last half hour.

This should go in the mudman thread but....
The protruding parts, beard , thumb, pipe ends, all protected from regular size fingers by the rest of the design.

There is a sub forum titled Accent Plants with a description that includes kusamono. It's not been particularly active, but there's some fun stuff in there.
