I started a small batch of Zelkova Serrata from seed in 2018.
This is how the survivors looked like 2 hours ago:

I gave them a haircut and wired some to set the initial branch structure.

Next step is to repot them in a few months and do some rootwork while we're at it.

Ah that one :)
It appeared to be dead at the end of last winter but I kept it anyway. Started to push buds on the lower trunk a few weeks after the other seedlings had leaved out. Everything above those buds died. I pruned it back but don't know what to do with it exactly. Maybe create a "bush"-broom :)

Little update on the one from the post above.
I repotted it in a trainingpot and it grew pretty good this year. Cut away 1 of the 4 trunks so now 3 remain. I also wired the trunks and the new shoots. Picture doesn't show how the little one looks like in 3D. Like always :)

Any updates? I just recently purchased a Zelkova and I’m going to style it as a broom style as well.

Your tree looks perfectly suitable for creating a broomstyle bonsai. Enjoy the process of doing so :)

Here are mine as they look now. 1st pic my small project batch, 2nd pic the one with the most potential.

FYI. Once you find them they root very easily from cuttings! I rooted a 3/4” thick top chopped off one.
Good to know. Glad I saved my cuttings from the first and only one I have. All dipped in rooting powder and potted. I actually just found this site https://www.evergreengardenworks.com/default.htm and bought some Zelkova and some apricots and prunus fingers crazed they’re decent trees🤞🏻 Got em arriving in May and September

You will not be disappointed. Brent knows what he is doing and if you look deeper into the website (Articles section), it’s a wealth of information!

Glad to hear it. I’ll have to look more into his site again. So far I am very pleased with his service. Usually very quick to respond and works with you quite well. Looking forward to the coming weeks

Ok, 2 years with no update had it's reasons. After the last pictures were taken none of the trees woke up except for the multitrunk one (that one is a real tough bastard). Over the course of the following year all of them but one died. The one that didn't die was the one with the most potential that I spoke about earlier (now it is the only one with potential...) Strangely it didn't develop leaves for the whole year but I kept it anyway. And guess what? At the beginning of the following year it sprouted leaves again after being leafless for over 15 months.

So I gave them a haircut today and wired some bigger branches.

The broomstyle one: Pruned the sacrifice branch and some branches that had no future. In a few lonths I will try to groundlayer it to get a better nebari.

The multitrunk: This one has been growing good for 2 years so it has a 1 year lead on the broomstyle. Cut back some branches to greate some taper and wired some bigger branches.
